Rezension zu “Der Fremde am Telefon”
Great suspense & insightful view of Berlin “nach der Wende” A very engaging novel about a serial killer of children, set in present-day Berlin. The case is assigned to Kommissar Anders, formerly with the East Berlin Kripo and now working under a very unsympathetic Kriminalrat and with a young colleague who is better versed than Anders in the current ways and terminology of the Berlin police and political scene “nach der Wende.”
Those who enjoy Colin Dexter’s “Inspector Morse” series will see parallels in Anders’ relationship with his boss and his youthful assistant. With a constantly shifting point of view — from Anders to Schröder, his young assistant, to the parents of one of the victims, to Jens, a young boy who fits the profile of a potential victim, to the murderer himself — the story holds your interest until the end.
Ms. Gelbhaar manages with few words to set the scene and make you feel as if you’re there, whether it’s with Anders as he drives through the rain in Pankow, reflecting on the dangers threatening all children, or with Jens, as he wakes up to strange phone calls in the middle of the night, or with the murderer, as he watches Jens playing soccer with his friends.
I strongly recommend this book.
